A Red Flag Warning is a forecast warning issued by the United States National Weather Service to tell area firefighting and land management agencies that conditions are ideal for wildland fire ignition and propagation. It is especially common in the hills of California in mid to late summer when humidity is low and when high or erratic winds will create explosive fire growth potential. The Red Flag Warning is a critical statement for firefighting agencies, which often alter their staffing and equipment resources dramatically to accommodate the forecast risk.

To the public, a Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will shortly, with increased probability of a quickly spreading vegetation fire in the area within 24 hours.

The weather criteria for a fire weather watch and a Red Flag Warning are based on the local vegetation type, topography, and distance from major water sources, and usually includes daily vegetation moisture content calculations, expected afternoon high temperatures, afternoon minimum relative humidity and daytime wind speeds.
