How true but sad. I wnoedr if the City of Detroit and other communties in Michigan could work with Fire Fighter Unions to devise a plan of supressing fires as soon as possible thereby limiting damage that may lessen the dollar cost of insurance claims.I believe that Communites throughout the country could benefit from a federal program that would provide the financial support to come up with an innovative approach to deal with this problem. It could be a pilot or temporary program that sunsets and would be measured to see if it produced positive results. I think if some initiative were taken a program just might reduce the dollar cost of claims and possibly stabilize insurance rates or retard their rapid escalation because of the arson problem. Obviously, any savings a program generates could be passed on to consumers in the form of lower insurance rates.

To Anonymous at 12:51 PM:I would ianigme that the reason behind this would be the differences in command structures between Police and Fire Depts. In a Fire Dept, a Deputy Chief is usually the shift commander. In a Police Dept. a lieutenant is often the equivalent.

Happy New Year Kurt. Were any of your books based on the book that was never published but written by John Orr "Point of Origin"? I have the book "Fire Lover" Which was based on his writings. I don't set fires but was facinated with the case. What a perfect job for an Arsonist.........Captian and Arson Invesigator. My favorite was the fires he set as he drove up North to give seminars. Please answer if you can. Thanks............Kelly

Hi Kelly
My arsonist - NiteHeat- thinks Orr is a jerk because his fires weren't elegant and had no imagination. Read Red Flag and let me know what you think. I read Fire Lover, but never saw Orr's own writing.
Happy New Year

I was also at camp 13 back in 98-99. Crew 4 baby!! They call me Niteowl for those that remember me. I was second saw and Birdsaw was our foreman. I came across this page because I was doing an essay on teams! Thanks to fire camp I paroled and became a medical assistant but am now going for my associates of science in Information technology. What we did as a team was amazing! I am now a young grandmother of 3 and tell them about camp 13! I am not ashamed! I'm proud! my past has made me the strong woman I am today.

I have a lot of respect for firefighters. They play an important role in our community too. In fact, besides manning the fire station, they had a booth at the firestation during the Apple Festival serving root beer floats--hubby and I both had one. Three different fire stations were represented and the guys from each one competed in a pie eating contest.

They went out on at three calls those two days of the festival and their rescue truck when out a couple of times too. My booth was right across the way so I could watch what was going on.

Fires are exciting and I included one in my latest children's book as well as an historical novel I'm currently writing. I
visited the local volunteer fire department last month for research and was amazed at how professional they are and how much equpment is there. What surprised me most is that women tellers from the nearby bank rush to the fire station to don their gear whenever they're called to put out fires. That's a novel waiting to be written. :)

I look forward to reading Bears With Us, Marilyn. Each of your books that I read is even better than the previous one.

I'm fortunate to never have experienced a fire, but agree it certainly does wonders to add tension and conflict to a story. Btw, I'm currently reading Bears With Us...and loving it!
