I remember the days. My DH was a Volly when we strated dating, and for about the first 7 or so years we were married. He went thru EMT school while working a full-time job, then got a 48/24 shift at an ambulance service 3 and sometimes more hours away from home, and still kept up his firefighter hours because he kept applying and trying to get on at a paid dept. Finally, our home county starting converting from a Volly Dept. to Paid, and on about the third round of hirings, he finally got on. As soon as our son got old enough, he joined the local Fire Explorers group, and as soon as he turned 18, he joined one of the local City depts. He's been a Volly almost 3 years now. Which brings a whole new set of issues. Most of which is a different topic altogether, but as pertaining to this one, I do still plan outings and such around his training.Calls, of course, can't be planned, and doesn't inconvenience me that much.Except if he goes on a call at night, I can't go to sleep until he's back home.

We've had some rain, so the number of fires in New Mexico has deacsreed. Fire is so frightening and I must admit that I am a little phobic. When I was four years old, my father's stable burned someone smoked in the room where the hay was stored. Twenty-some horses died in the fire. I can still see, hear and smell it sixty years later.

Also I don't see how running on the fire gruond makes us look stupid as well. I work for a large east coast fire department that is always in the top 10 for calls in the country every year. We are known for having some of the most aggressive engine ops in the nation. We HAVE to run or we would probably be fired before even making it out of the academy. We run in, put the fire out, and leave as fast as possible since we need to be ready for the next call when each engine runs 15-35 runs/day.
