We had a call for a cat ‘rescue’ a few years ago. A lady called the firehouse and stated that her cat had been in a tree for ‘a few days’. Being an all volunteer FD I called the chief to see what he would like us to do. He said go on out to the residence and see what the situation was. We arrived and found a cat about 50 feet up in a tree. My wife was a member of our FD at the time and is an animal lover. She tried repeatedly to coax this poor cat down. It did not work. After some discussion amongst my fellow firefighters, it was decided that the only course of action was to cut down the tree. As captain, I instructed one of my firefighters to get the chainsaw. With permission of the homeowner, we cut that tree down. The cat had a very surprised look when we fired up the saw and I am surprised it didn’t climb higher. We cut the tree down with the cat falling one way and the tree the other. The cat did survive and is doing well. The thing we found funniest of all was the ‘oh shit’ look on the cat’s face.
