FIREFIGHTER’S WORDS -145- SAVED BY MY SQUAD
..I love trauma..until it happened to me..
Mine happened on Jan. 1st…..I was driving along the road, which was bad from the snow, when a pickup ran me off the road. When he ran me off , I went down a steep embankment and my SUV rolled several times and came to rest right side up against a tree.
The driver of the pickup was a drunk driver. He crashed but escaped with minor scrapes. Needless to say, I was not as lucky, when Fire/Rescue showed up they realized it was one of their own. The guys had a rough time. They did everything they could and it tore them up to see me.
I was later told when they got to me I was unconscious with shallow breathing. They had to extricate me and said they had a hell of a time trying to get me out. They not only had to do door and roof removal, but to make matters worse, the dashboard was on my legs and they had to cut it off. I got to the hospital and was there for several days. I ended up with a bad concussion, a broken collar bone and an open tib/fib fracture which required surgery.
I am happy to say that my seatbelt saved my life..and the weird thing is I do not wear it often. Something that day just told me to wear it. Thank God I did or I would not be here today. I am still alive, in pain and recovering. Sad to say. I can’t run on calls for a few weeks, but my dept has put me on paid leave. I can show up for shift but am not required to do much.
Thankfully, my boys were there and acted quickly to save my life!
