FIREFIGHTER’S WORDS -103- IN ABU DHABI
Greetings from the desert
I’m from Frankfurt, Germany I started my career as firefighter in 2000 as a volunteer. In 2004 I started my education as paramedic. After graduation I worked in the southern part of Germany near Munich on ambulances and helicopters. I also began with lessons in rope and mountain rescue. I continued my education in firefighting, and became platoon leader. I had many special courses as Hazmat, rope rescue, heavy technical rescue and so on.
In April 2008, I started work in the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi. It’s the biggest of the 7 Emirates with the most oil. I’m together with about 70 other firefighters. We are working to establish a firefighting system here in the UAE. We began to order new trucks, ladders and equipment and trained to use this equipment. At the moment we have 6 Quick Intervention Units which are well trained and equipped fire stations and a lot of fire stations which still need to be trained. It’s very interesting to work with people from other cultures and different nationalities. And everybody can learn from this.
