FIREFIGHTER’S WORDS -86- JUST A DAY’S WORK
The day that stands out in my mind was a day in the ice and snow. The first run my partner and I made was in the county. We fought getting to the home, praying not to go in a ditch.
Someone had slipped and fallen on the ice. County Fire was there with us. We loaded the patient. When departed, we couldn’t steer and the truck went straight on the ice. The tree in the ditch was coming closer and then our truck stopped at the edge of the road. County fire stopped and we were trying to figure out what we where going to do. The tow trucks could not get to us because of the ice. The county sent out a salt truck and as it was getting close, I turned to the firefighters that I was standing with and we watched our truck slide into the ditch with the patient, spouse, and my partner.
The rest of the day was no better, trying to get patients into the truck, crawling on our hands and knees because of the ice. The last run was the best! The patient was released from the hospital 45 min. before our call came, because the doctor believed that her contractions were not steady. We picked her up and on the way back to the hospital we had to stop in the middle of the expressway and deliver her baby.
After a day that started so badly it was a wonderful feeling to bring a life into the world. This was a day when we never knew what we would have, but it also shows you the range of things which could happen to us in one day.
And people just call us ambulance drivers.
